ABSTARCT
This study was carried out on the social perception of tricycles restriction and waste management strategies in enhancing environmental aesthetics and psychological well-being of residents in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. To achieve this 3 research questions and 2 hypothesis were formulated. The study was carried out in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of the entire tricycle drivers and residents in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 220 respondents of which 200 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and percentage. While the hypothesis were tested using Chi-square Statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that; over population contributes to increase in waste generation in the city, while increase in waste generation affects the health and psychological well-being of residents. The findings also disclosed that the restriction of tricycle from some part of Uyo will improve the environmental aesthetics of the area and waste management strategy will influence environmental aesthetics and psychological wellbeing. Lastly the findings discovered that tricycle restriction will influence environmental aesthetics and psychological wellbeing of residents in the area. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that there is need to influence people’s behaviour toward waste issues through a carefully planned engagement strategy. This needs to focus holistically on increasing awareness of waste issues, the importance and ways of preventing waste, plus information on how to compost and the benefits. And more so, the government should through statistical measures limit the number of tricycles to a certain number that will serve the residents adequately and not allowing surplus flow of tricycles in the city.
